Structure of the study course

B.Sc Natural Resources Management

General remarks

In English language only the study course M.Sc. Management Natural Ressources is possible on personal request, B.Sc. is not available in English language.

The study programme M.Sc. Management Natural Ressources is composed of modules, each of which has 5 or 10 Credit Points (ECTS points). In total 120 ECTS points are necessary for the M.Sc. Management Natural Ressources.

The compulsory modules sum up to a total of 30 ECTS points.

From the first semester on, the specialization starts in one of the three fields soil, water and/or plant. To achieve the M.Sc. 60 ECTS points in the specialization field (elective modules) are necessary (12 modules).

The M.Sc. thesis is planned to a workload of about 6 months and amounts to 30 ECTS points.

B.Sc. compulsory modules (30 ECTS)

The compulsory modules comprise in each semester one methodical module, and one module from the main topics water, soil, plant.

First semester
Physico-chemistry of soil (5 ECTS), Special mathematics for geoscientists (5 ECTS)

Second semester
Numerical groundwater modelling (5 ECTS), Soil hydrology (5 ECTS)

Third semester
Sustainable land use (5 ECTS), Enviromental toxicology (5 ECTS)

B.Sc. elective modules (60 ECTS)

The 60 ECTS of the elective modules of the M.Sc. Management Natural Ressources can be selected from the following table (each 5 ECTS points):

  • Angewandte Geofernerkundung
  • Angewandter Landschaftswasserhaushalt
  • Biogeographie
  • Boden-Pflanze Interaktionsraum Rhizosphäre
  • Bodenkundliche Projektübungen
  • Deposit modelling
  • Düngung landwirtschaftlicher Nutzpflanzen
  • Environmental and soil mineralogy
  • Environmental contaminants
  • Groundwater protection
  • Groundwater ressources in arid areas
  • Isotope hydrology and organic hydrogeochemistry
  • Klimawandel
  • Management of soil organic matter
  • Matter and material flow analysis
  • Modellbildung in der Geoökologie
  • Projektmodul Naturschutz
  • Ressourcenmanagement und Ressourcenschutz
  • Soil Biogeochemical analysis
  • Soils under warm and cold climate
  • Water management

Mainly for non-consecutive students the possibility is given to improve their skills in the topics soil sciences, hydrogeology, forest use and GIS via 3 modules of the B.Sc.

Additionally the possibility of maximum 2 free modules is given to facilitate the acceptance of study modules in other Universities (also in other countries).

B.Sc. thesis (30 ECTS)

The M.Sc. thesis is planned for a workload of six months and gets 30 ECTS points. It gives therefore enough time for self organized and independent scientific specialization in one of the main topics water, soil and plants or an interdisciplinary work.

B.Sc. Internship (10 ECTS)

Practical knowledge is required for the study programme Management of Natural Resources. Therefore, in order to successfully complete the study programme, a professional internship with a total duration of 8 weeks must be proven by an internship certificate and a report.

M.Sc Natural Resources Management

General remarks

The study programme M.Sc. Management of Natural Resources is composed of modules (subjects). With the successful completion of modules, 5 or 10 credit points are acquired. A total of 120 credit points must be proven for the M.Sc. degree.

Compulsory modules comprise a total of 30 LP in the M.Sc. degree programme.

From the beginning of the M.Sc. programme, specialisation (in-depth study) takes place for the areas of soil, water and/or plants. For this purpose, 12 compulsory elective modules with a total of 60 credit points must be completed in the M.Sc. programme.

M.Sc. compulsory modules (30 ECTS)

The compulsory modules of the M.Sc. Management of Natural Resources consist of a methods module and one module each from the fields of water, soil and plants in each semester.

1st semester
Physico-chemistry of soil (5 LP), Special mathematics for geoscientists (5 LP)

2nd semester
Numerical groundwater modelling (5 LP), Soil hydrology (5 LP)

3rd semester
Sustainable land use (5 LP), Enviromental toxicology (5 LP)

M.Sc. elective modules (60 ECTS)

The 60 credit points of the elective canon of the M.Sc. Management of Natural Resources can be freely compiled from the following offer (5 LP each):

  • Applied geo-remote sensing
  • Applied landscape water balance
  • Biogeography
  • Soil-plant interaction space rhizosphere
  • Soil science project exercises
  • Deposit modelling
  • Fertilisation of agricultural crops
  • Environmental and soil mineralogy
  • Environmental contaminants
  • Groundwater protection
  • Groundwater resources in arid areas
  • Isotope hydrology and organic hydrogeochemistry
  • Climate change
  • Management of soil organic matter
  • Matter and material flow analysis
  • Modelling in geoecology
  • Project Module Nature Conservation
  • Resource management and conservation
  • Soil biogeochemical analysis
  • Soils under warm and cold climate
  • Water management

Especially for non-consecutive students, there is the possibility of supplementing knowledge with a maximum of 3 bridge courses from the B.Sc. programme, especially on the topics of soil science, hydrogeology, GIS & geostatistics and forest use, which are credited within the framework of the compulsory elective programme.

In addition, there is the possibility to choose a maximum of two free modules, which facilitates the recognition of achievements in semesters abroad in particular.

M.Sc. thesis (30 ECTS)

The M.Sc. thesis takes six months and is counted as 30 LP in the degree. It thus offers sufficient room for independent scientific work and is completed either specialising in one of the areas of water, soil or plants or interdisciplinary.
